The six wives are usually the first thing people mention â€" followed shortly by the strange aura that surrounds the figure of Anne Boleyn in particular.Then there is the great conflict between Catholicism and Protestantism â€" and the dissolution of the monasteries, something that really changed the English landscape permanently. Or the Spanish Armada, the fleet of ships sent by Philip II to attack England â€" only to be swept off course by the winds.Tudor history is something we all know something about. Or at least think we know something about. However, this long and complex period still holds many surprises indeed â€" and so it can never hurt to go over it again.Here, we’re going to take a long look at this most captivating of periods in the history of England. And we’re willing to bet that you’l l learn something that you didn’t know before.However, let’s tackle the important question first.Why Do We Care so Much about the Tudors?There is something a little strange about the Tudors. This period is perhaps the one moment in English history â€" along with perhaps the Second World War â€" that you will definitely cover at least a little at school.As a nation, we seem to be a little enamoured by this House of Tudor, with TV shows, films, and endlessly popular books being published on the period. This long sixteenth century â€" between 1485 and 1603 â€" seems to hold a special place in the English imaginary.Yet, why might this be?The common answer to this is that some of the biggest leaps towards the country that England is today were taken during this period. The gradual centralisation of the English state, the move towards a Protestant Church of England under King Edward VI, and the flourishing of a distinctly English literary and artistic culture. All of this happened dur ing this period.And with all this was born a nation â€" a nation distinct from Catholic Europe â€" and an empire. Because, really, they were not a particularly stable dynasty â€" nor one that actually had much legit imacy at all.The family themselves were from Wales â€" a family of the Welsh nobility â€" and had a claim to the English throne through Edward III’s son, John of Gaunt. Henry VII was the great-grandson of an illegitimate child of John of Gaunt â€" which, in the great scheme of things, was not really a watertight claim to the highest position in the country.This is why, throughout Henry VII’s reign, there were a number of rebellions and attempted coups that tried to replace the first Tudor king with a Yorkist. Image from WikipediaThe Wars of the Roses (1455-1485)As you might well know, the Tudors came to power at the end of the War of the Roses, when Henry Tudor defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field. This war was the result of major disagreements regarding who would take the throne, with the House of York on one side and the House of Lancaster on the other.This Lancastrian, Henry Tudor, ultimately defeated the Yorkists. And his great achievement was to unite the country â€" largely â€" after thirty years of war. He married Elizabeth of York and brought power under himself. And, thus, the Tudor dynasty was born â€" in 1485.The Union of the Crowns (1603)It ended in 1603, on the death of Elizabeth I. The whole dynasty had been anxious about the need for an heir â€" a problem of succession that was exacerbated by the distant memory of the chaos that preceded them.Yet, Elizabeth â€" unmarried, or rather, as s he said, married to the country â€" did not produce one. And so the Tudor dynasty ended on her death.James VI of Scotland â€" the great-great-grandson of Henry VII â€" replaced her, unifying two separate political entities, Scotland and England, under one crown. Not really a bad set of achievements if we must say.His reign essentially enabled the excess, the indulgence, and the military exploits of his son’s. And by bringing the distant elements of the kingdom under greater central control, he laid the ground for Henry VIII’s attempts to do the same.King Henry VIII (1509-1547)The six wives, the dissolution of the monasteries, the English reformation. There are few kings more famous in English history than Henry VIII.A charismatic figure when young, he died a grumpy, unpleasant, and severely ill man. And whilst his policies perhaps did more to change the face of England than anyone else’s during this period, he wasn’t necessarily the shrewdest of kings.Unnecessary, expensive wars and severe popular reaction to his policies, he was lucky to make it to the end of his reign.Edward VI (1547-1553)The boy king with the bad health, Edward VI succeeded his father in 1547, at the age of ten.A committed Protestant, he made his father’s reforms of the Church of England much more radical â€" under the supervision of two hugely influential advisors, Somerset and Northumberland.However, he died only six years later â€" with his own anxiety about his successor clear in his mind. His attempts to put Lady Jane Grey â€" another Protestant â€" on the throne after his death ended tragically.Mary I (1553-1558)And so, Mary I, Edward’s half-sister, became queen. Staunchly Catholic and periodically ill throughout her life, her reign was a tumultuous one.She’s known for returning England back under the religious jurisdiction of Rome, for reversing all of Edward’s â€" and many of Henry’s â€" religious reforms, and for her offensive against Protestants in England. Hence the name Bloody Mary. Mary I maybe wasn't so bloody as we like to thinkQueen Elizabeth I of England (1558-1603)The Golden Age of early modern England, the Elizabethan era will be remembered forever â€" for its cultural production, its colonial expansion, and for its consolidation of the English church and state.Elizabeth returned the kingdom to Protestantism â€" and presided over a period of English success.What Was it Like in the Tudor Times?However, enough of the monarchs. What would it have been like for you in the Tudor era?The simple answer to this lies in the question of class â€" or, to use a less historically contested term, your place in the social hierarchy. If, on the other hand, you were born into a noble family, you’d probably do all right â€" unless you fell into the monarch’s disfavour.The whole universe was conceived as a great hierarchy, the Great Chain of Being, as it has become known â€" from God to the poorest people to the animals. This idea meant that you probably wouldn’t complain too much about your position.Work During the TudorsAnd your work was determined by your social position too. Again, if you were a noble, you could expect some sort of influence over politics and at the royal court. If you were poor, however, you’d probably be a peasant â€" given that much of the population was rural.The trouble for the poor was that it was really crucial not to become unemployed. To check that the bow hair is not too tight or too loose, place your index finger between the hair and the wooden part of the bow. If the tightness is correct, it should fit comfortably.Taking good care of your violin bow is essential to making a good sound ¦ source: Visualhunt - FloodAnother way that you can check the tightness of the bow hair is by looking at the wooden part of the bow, which should be slightly curved towards the hair. If it starts to bend outwards, the hai r is too tight.In the same way, after you have finished playing your violin, you need to loosen the horsehair before you put your bow away.To do this, simply turn the screw at the end of the bow to the left.2.           Apply rosin to the violin bowApplying rosin to the horsehair once it has been tightened is part of preparing your bow before you play the violin.Rosin is a solid amber residue which comes from tree sap. Its purpose is to provide a level of friction between the bow hair and the violin string â€" without it, the bow would simply slide over the violin strings producing no sound. Most violins are sold with rosin as part of their outfit.To apply the rosin, simply hold the bow in your right hand and the rosin in your left hand. Next, stroke the full length of the bow over the block of rosin for 20 full strokes.Once you have completed 20 strokes, try bowing a note on your violin. If it is quiet or scratchy, apply more rosin until the sound is clearer.3.           Wipe your violin down with a dust clothOnce you have finished your violin lessons or practice sessions, it is recommended that you wipe your violin down with a dry cloth.Wiping your violin will prevent any dust from building up as well as protecting the violin’s strings from a sticky build-up of rosin.You should also wipe the wooden part of your violin bow before putting it away.To wipe down your violin, you can use any dry cleaning cloth, but microfibre and dusting cloths are the most effective at removing unwanted dust from the instrument’s body, bow and strings.If you want to make sure that your cleaning cloth is doing its job properly, make sure that you wash it regularly. Washing will remove most of the dirt, however, once there has been a significant build-up of rosin, you will need to replace your cloth.4.           Put your violin awayStoring your violin safely is one of the most important parts of caring for your string instrument.The vast majority of violins, when bought, come i n cases which are made especially for their shape.These cases are designed to house the instrument safely and protect it from external damage, providing support of the violin’s most delicate parts including the neck, the bridge, the scroll the tailpiece the tuning pegs, and of course the bow. When buying a violin, make sure it comes with a proper case - whether it's a low or high-priced violin, you need to be able to store it properly.Violins are incredibly delicate instruments, which is why it is essential that they are stored correctly in their cases when they are not being played. This means that they shouldn’t be balanced on a chair, placed on a violin stand or left anywhere they could be knocked over or trodden on.General MaintenanceAs the proud owner of a violin, its maintenance isn’t limited to daily tasks â€" there are plenty of things you need to do on a less regular basis to ensure that your instrument is in the best possible condition for playing.Here are the main t hings you need to know about general violin maintenance: ·                 Replace the violin’s stringsIt is recommended that the musician replaces their violin’s strings every 12 months, however, this may vary depending on how often you play your violin.Replacing a violin’s strings may seem daunting at first, so if you’re a novice, you may wish to approach a professional at your local violin shop who can help you ¦ source: Pixbay - PilotBrentMaking sure that your violin’s strings are relatively new will mean that your violin maintains a bright and warm sound.Violin strings can be bought from any good music shop. A good violin tuner will help you adjust your new strings. ·                 Rehair your bowJust like the violin’s strings, the horsehair on the violin bow can also become worn and brittle over time.The guidelines for rehairing  violin bows are less clear than those for restringing an instrument, but the general advice is to have your bow hair changed once it s tops feeling ‘right’ or becomes noticeably dirty.Some professionals have their horsehair changed every few months or so, whereas many students can go over two years without having any new bowhair.The changing of bow hair should be a job which is reserved only for those who specialize in bow making â€" do not try to rehair your bow by yourself. ·                 Temperature and humidity levelsChanges in the humidity and temperature of an environment are known to affect musical instruments carved from wood (including the guitar and woodwind insturments such as the clarinet).As a rule of thumb, in order to keep their violin at a suitable temperature, violinists are told to treat their instrument as they would treat a human. Although this may sound extreme, keeping your violin at a temperature which is comfortable for you is the best way to prevent warping and cracks to the violin’s delicate body.So, don’t leave your violin in a freezing-cold car overnight, nor on the backseat d uring a sunny day.Humidity is also an issue which violinists need to consider.As violins are crafted from wood, they naturally exchange moisture with the surrounding air. For this reason, maintaining regular humidity levels is important for preventing warping.It is recommended that violins are kept in environments with 40%-60% humidity. How to Use a Capo 5 Useful Tips Suzy S. Have you ever been frustrated with the key of a song, and wanted to change it instantly without having to transpose everything and learn new chords? Well, now you can! Learning how to use a capo can be a lifesaver, especially if you enjoy singing along or if you frequently work with vocalists. For an easy, hands-on way to see how a capo works, try playing a normal C chord. Place your capo on the first fret. Then play the same position you just played youll notice its now half-step higher (C#). Next, move the capo to the second fret. Voila now you have the key of D. See where were going with this? As you experiment more with your capo, youll get better at recognizing which chords youre actually playing. In the meantime, consider keeping a capo chart nearby to cross-reference. Here are some additional tips to keep in mind: Check your tuning. Clamping the capo down on your strings sometimes causes them to go out of tune, so youll want to tune your guitar again when youre done using the capo. This is especially applicable for electric guitars, since the strings are so much lighter. Always place the capo slightly behind the fret never directly on top of it. Experiment with different types of capos. Spring-loaded (or trigger) capos are a popular choice, which are easier to use than a c-clamp capo. The latter type requires you to manually tighten the capo against the fret, whereas the former can be taken off quickly and with one hand. Another type is a toggle capo, which is generally the least expensive, but is also very flimsy. Shubb and Kyser are two well-known brands to check out. Use a partial capo for alternate tunings. A partial (or cut) capo covers only some of the strings. It gives off a distinct drone sound often used in Celtic music, and it also allows you to explore with alternate tunings, like Drop-D. Dont be afraid to experiment and play around with it! Watch for buzzing. If you have the capo in place, but your strings are still buzzing, try adjusting the capos position until you get a clean sound. That doesn’t mean that you can’t fix it, but it’s better to invest in accessories that’ll prevent this rather than fixing it.Tripods are the most common option. They’re usually quite easy to transport as they fold up. That said, they can be quite heavy. The heavier your camera, the heavier your tripod will need to be. It’s a way to stop the glare from the sun appearing on your footage. Too much sunlight will cause streaks of light to appear on your footage. The sunshade will protect unwanted light sources from entering the lens.  Additionally, it can also act as a small buffer protecting the lens from impacts.FiltersFilters can be attached to the ends of lenses and can filter certain types of light. Whether it’s for photography or filming, you can use them to a lter the colours, contrast, etc.  There are several types available.Invest in a ViewfinderRarely, you can’t see what you’re filming. However, you'll want to see exactly what your camera sees. Most digital cameras now come with an LCD where you can see the image being captured. However, in the sunshine or the rain, you can’t always see this screen. If you can't see what your camera is capturing, you might want a viewfinder. This is a situation familiar to many K-12 students, who seem to freeze when they see a math problem. Their research shows that the anxiety of math teachers and parents can rub off on their students, ultimately affecting theirlearning. Fortunately, proven classroom methods have also been tested to reduce students' anxiety of doing mathematics. These tips include: Focus on learning the process behind math concepts, rather than merely trying to get a right answer. Similarly, don't refer to the textbook's answer key very often. Instead, value the problem and have students arrive at their own answers. Encourage every student to work on the problem on paper. This is in contrast to more traditional methods where one student raises his/her hand, blurts out the answer, and then the teacher promptly moves on to the next question. Four Tips to Find Great Research Sources Online - TutorNerds How to Find Great Research Sources Online Every student will do research for a paper or classroom assignment and will need to find some of these sources online. At first, online research seems like it would be easier than searching through a brick-and-mortar library because students can work on their computer in the convenience of their own home. However, looking for good sources online can become overwhelming pretty quickly because the Internet is filled with all sorts of information that is not necessarily appropriately sourced or written by an expert. Its important that students find the right information that can help them support their thesis or complete their assignment. There are several ways students can find great resources online using these tips. 1. Look for the author or publisher Students should first consider who the author is and if they have any expertise in the subject, they are writing about. If students are looking for sources for a science paper, they should determine whether or not the author has a background in science, a degree in this subject, or even a particular interest in what theyre writing about. Students should also consider the publisher. Is this a well-known science magazine that has been published for years? Is it a personal opinion blog? What else has the publisher put online recently? 2. Is the information sourced? The second thing students should look at is whether or not the information presented in the publication has been appropriately sourced. If students are reading about current events, for example, they are encouraged to look for quotes or source material at the bottom of the publication. If the information isnt sourced, then its the authors personal opinion. Students should consider how important it is that they use quotes and sources in their papers and that its as important that the author they’re reading about source any information that didnt come from their mind (READ: San Diego Tutoring Tips: Ways to Improve Concentration). 3. Fact versus opinion Students need to learn the difference between a stated fact and an authors opinion. An excellent source will provide a balanced opinion which does not try to sway the reader but rather presents information from multiple perspectives and allows the reader to come up with an opinion of their own. There might be multiple sides to a news story, and there can be multiple interpretations of a piece of literature, for example. Students need to know the difference, so they dont read about somebodys opinion and think it’s a fact. Facts can always be confirmed through outside sources while opinions can come from anywhere. 4. Common knowledge and subject-specific knowledge Students also need to determine the difference between common knowledge, something that does not need to be quoted, and subject-specific knowledge, which will need a quotation or source. A great example of common knowledge is that the Declaration of Independence was ratified on July 4th, 1776. This is considered to be something that everybody knows thus students are not required to provide a quote. On the other hand, if a student is writing about the significance of automobiles in the novel The Great Gatsby, they will need to provide a quotation or source to support their interpretation.
